As a major fishing port, Old Perlican's harbour facilities are managed by the Harbour Authority of Old Perlican, a federal government agency associated with Small Craft Harbours, Dept of Fisheries and Oceans. The Authority is responsible for heritage and gear storage facilities for fishers, as well as providing water and electrical services to commercial and pleasure boats. The Authority has ongoing plans for harbour improvements.
The Harbour Authority of Old Perlican was formed in February of 1996. It is an incorporated, not-for-profit organization with a general membership of 20 and is managed by an elected Board of Directors (7) who are all volunteers.
The agenda of the corporation is to operate, maintain and manage a public fishing harbour.
By collecting revenue for services such as berthage, wharf services and landings - a harbour authority can usually hire a full time seasonal harbour supervisor who will look after the day to day operations of the facility and report back to the Board of Directors.
